The State of Texas is spending nearly $100,000 in federal economic development grants to promote tourism in Gonzales through a new $12 million joint promotional program through Travel Texas.

From May 2022 to August 2022, Travel Texas will spend approximately $58,000 to promote the Gonzales Convention and Visitors Bureau and nearly $40,000 to promote the Crystal Theater in Gonzales, with costs covered by a grant from the US Economic Development Agency.

“The State of Texas has received a $12 million COVID recovery grant for eligible tourism organizations,” said Barbara Crozier, Vice President of the Board of Directors of Crystal Theater and Board Member of the Gonzales CVB.

“CVB automatically qualified and I also submitted a grant application for Crystal because we also qualified because of the parameters. And believe it or not, I actually got them both.”

Among the things the grant pays for are programmatic banners that appear on websites and redirect visitors to the Gonzales CVB and the Crystal Theatre.

“I know tourism has been paying for this for years,” Crozier said. “And they are quite expensive because they have a lot of pedestrians. They show up in stories that have something to do with what you’re reading about.”

The funds were also used to create cultural maps for both CVB and Crystal, as well as 15-second videos for the Gonzales Come and Take It festival and the Shakespeare Young Ninjas program at the Crystal Theater.

According to Travel Texas, the US Economic Development Agency travel grant is part of an effort to promote Texas and travel destination market organizations “to spur a recovery in the leisure and hospitality sector following the impact of the pandemic on travel.”

The mission of Travel Texas is to enhance and expand local economic development efforts by promoting Texas as a premier travel destination in the out-of-state domestic and international markets, creating out-of-state trips, thereby generating income and jobs. It is located in the Governor’s Office, Department of Economic Development and Tourism.
