NEW YORK (AP) — Alec John Such, bassist and founding member of Bon Jovi, has died. He was 70.
Jon Bon Jovi on Sunday announced the death of Jon Such, bassist for the New Jersey rock band from 1983 to 1994. No details have been released about when or how John Such died. Bon Jovi’s publicist did not immediately respond to messages.
“He was an original,” Bon Jovi tweeted. “As one of the founding members of Bon Jovi, Alec was integral to the formation of the band.”
Bon Jovi credited John Such for putting the band together, noting that he was a childhood friend of drummer Tico Torres and brought guitarist/songwriter Richie Sambora to see the band perform. John Such played in The Message with Sambora.

Yonkers, New York native John Such was a veteran of the New Jersey music scene who helped spawn Bon Jovi. As manager of the Hunka Bunka ballroom in Sayreville, New Jersey, Jon Such booked Jon Bon Jovi & The Wild Ones before joining the singer-songwriter’s band. He played with Bon Jovi during the band’s heyday in the 80s.
John Such left the band in 1994 when bassist Hugh McDonald replaced him. He later joined the band for its induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
“When Jon Bon Jovi called me many years ago and asked me to join his band, I soon realized how serious he was and he had a vision that he wanted to lead us to,” Jon Such said at the Hall of Fame induction. “And I’m very happy to be a part of that vision.”
